Barton’s Silver Cougar Club Still Growing After Eight Years
Barton Community College’s Silver Cougar Club, specifically for people age 55 or older, has grown steadily since its beginning in 2001 with a nucleus of 12 members. Eight years later, at the time of its June picnic and membership drive, the club boasted more than 577.

Board of Trustees Study Session Report, June 4, 2009
Barton Insurance Renewal 8 Percent Less
Barton Community College Board of Trustees heard encouraging news during its June 4 study session. While the national recession has affected Barton through increased costs, investment losses and a recent 4.25 percent reduction in state aid, the College is expected to save approximately 8 percent on premiums next fiscal year for property, casualty and workers compensation. Barton’s current coverage is with EMC/Cincinnati Insurance (Conrade Insurance Group).

Barton’s Paramedic Hybrid Course Gives Rural EMS Successful Training Options
Over a year ago when paramedic training was needed to strengthen his workforce but high gas prices made travel costly to attend classes, Chief Mark Willis of Newton Fire and EMS was looking for a way to help some of his EMTs get the training they needed for the advanced life support certification. “I was looking for alternatives to the traditional paramedic course that would allow me to maintain my staff and not take them away from their work, or build up overtime hours,” he said.
He found the solution in Barton Community College’s inaugural paramedic hybrid course. The first of its kind in Kansas, the course began in January 2008 and graduated its first class this spring after 15 months of study and practical training in the field.

6/3/09 Barton Begins Lunch and Learn Series on Hiring Non-traditional Employees
Barton Community College will sponsor a Summer Lunch and Learn Series in partnership with KANSASWORKS, offering information to employers on the benefits of hiring non-traditional employees. Tax credits and job sharing are two of the benefits to be discussed.
All three sessions in the series are free. Participants are invited to bring their lunch to each session, meeting from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursdays, June 25, June 30 and Aug. 27, at the KANSASWORKS Office, Room D-106, 1025 Main, in Great Bend.

Two Barton Community College student organizations combined their efforts to raise money for Big Brothers/Big Sisters this spring by participating in the Bowl for Kids’ Sake event.

Pioneer Class Completes Natural Gas Transmission and Distribution Training
They are known as pioneers, those first seven students who boldly entered Barton Community College’s new Natural Gas Transmission and Distribution program last August. To say those students entered into a unique experience is an understatement. Barton’s program is the first of its kind anywhere, offering a 64-credit associate degree program. The program also offers 33-credit and 16-credit certificates.

5/19/09 Barton Receives Grant for Crop Protection Application Program
The Kansas Department of Commerce has awarded a $74,836 Workforce Solutions Fund Grant to Barton Community College for its Crop Protection Application Program.
This three-year grant plus matching in-kind contributions totaling $148,708 will be used to develop the curriculum of Barton’s Crop Protection Application Program and to purchase equipment to support the program.
